Lebanon speaker condoles demise of senior Iran cleric

Nabih Berri in separate messages, condoled death of Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi to the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani as well as Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.

In the meantime, Head of the Higher Shiite Islamic Council Sheikh Abdul Amir Qabalan also released a message of condolences on demise of the Iranian Ayatollah.

Ayatollah Shahroudi, the chairman of Expediency Council, passed away in Khatam ul-Anbiya Hospital in Tehran late on Monday.

After a long battle with disease, he died at the age of 70.

Ayatollah Shahroudi was born in Najaf, Iraq, in 1948 and had served as a member of the Guardian Council as of 1994.

He was also judiciary chief and member of Experts Council. As of 2017, he was chairman of Expediency Council.

Ayatollah Shahroudi was a student of Ayatollah Mohammad-Baqer Sadr, a leader of opposition against Saddam who was executed in 1980.

Iranian government, in a message condoling the demise of Ayatollah Shahrudi declared Wednesday, December 26th, as public mourning throughout the country.
