Closing US consulate aims at destabilizing Basra: local official

'The claim that three mortars were shot at the US consulate is a plan designed by Washington and implemented by their accomplices in order to make up an excuse to leave Basra and use it as a pretext to make sedition in the province,' said Ghanem al-Mayahi in press conference on Saturday.

Al-Mayahi said that the US plans to make the claim to cause sedition to disrupt the Shias in Basra and push it toward Iran.

It is also a new attempt to accuse al-Hashd al-Shabi and the Islamic Resistance, al-Mayahi said, adding that the US consulate has not announced any decision to leave Basra; they have just informed the security forces.

'US Department of State's summoning its consul is nothing but to convey a message to Iran,' said Safa al-Asam, a security expert.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ordered the US consulate's employees to leave the province and accused Iran of making the threats.

Spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bahram Qasemi said on Saturday that the US' accusations and claims against Iran and Iraq is 'a dubious act of blame game' and passing the buck to others. 'Iran condemns attacks on diplomatic places.'

The claim made by the US saying that three mortars were shot at their consulate in Basra has not been confirmed by any official source.
