'The imbalance is so big that the Eastern media use the Western ones to produce news and cannot use original sources; therefore, we need to create new media facilities to create information and communication balance,' said Zia Hashemi, in a debate arranged by the Russia 24 about 'Media Inequality: How to balance media in the world.'
Referring to US President Donald Trump's unilateralism, he said, 'Today in the US a person is in apex of power that says, 'The interests of the US are my priority.' Credibility of the US is of no significance to him, and unfortunately, his policies are belligerent.'
'Not only do the US' moves harm economic sections of Russia, China and other developing countries, they (US officials) also, in the framework of unilateral policies, do not want other countries to share power with them.'
Saying that the same atmosphere is seen in the media world, Hashemi added, 'The domineering Western media don’t let others grow; they back the hegemony and intend to control the world, so they are pressing the other countries more than ever.'
'We should be hopefully looking for an appropriate solution,' said Hashemi, adding the world has drastically changed since a century ago; 'the East has become a rival to the EU and the US, so the Americans are worried about that.'
He also said that the EU is not a unified entity, because it encircles different currents, and added that during his visit to China, a suggestion was offered that China, Russia and Iran unite to form a new media structure to be able to counter the Western media hegemony.
The managing director of IRNA said, 'We should have synergy to counter the Western media. Other countries can also join the new media structure of Iran, China and Russia; human values are more important to us.'
Managing Director of the Islamic Republic News Agency Zia Hashemi is in St. Petersburg to attend an international conference of world news agencies.
