
In an exclusive interview with Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) in New York following Trump's announcement that Washington will no longer abide by the international deal, Gary Sick said he was of the belief that this act was a historical mistake that would return the United States to where it was five years ago.
He said all parties to the agreement and even members o f the Trump administration have already said the deal served the American national interests and confirmed Iran's commitment to it. It is clear that President Trump is opposed to everybody, he added.
Sick who served on the National Security Council under Presidents Ford, Carter and Reagan said the US president's act would put the country at odds with its allies besides increasing the risk of conflicts in the Middle East and removing a main obstacle on the way of Iran moving towards a full nuclear program.
On the effects of US bilateral sanctions against Iran, he said the United States has imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic for the past 40 years but the sanctions really began to bite when other countries stood behind America. However, such a situation does not exist today.
US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Washington would pull out of Iran nuclear deal and reinstate nuclear sanctions on Iran.
The Zionist regime, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were among the first countries to support Trump's act.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday it is the US government that has failed to abide by its obligations under the nuclear deal with Iran.
Speaking on the national TV minutes after the US President Donald Trump announced that Washington would unilaterally pull out of the deal, Rouhani said that the American government has always been hostile to the Iranian nation and the regional nations of Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, the Middle East and North Africa.
He stressed that unlike the US, Iran has always been committed to its obligations under the nuclear deal.
Former US President Barack Obama in a statement said Trump's decision to walking away from Iran Deal was a mistake.
