Iran, Burundi decide to set up joint eco-political committee

The two countries’ foreign ministers agreed on setting up a joint committee last year during a visit to Tehran by Burundi foreign minister and the MoU was signed on Friday after being finalized by Director General of Iran’s Foreign Ministry for African Affairs Mehdi Aqa-Jafari and Director General of Burundi Foreign Ministry for Africa, Asia and the Pacific Affairs Ferdinand Bashikov.

Based on the MoU, the joint committee will convene a session in Tehran and Bujumbura annually under directors general of the two countries’ foreign ministries’ for political affairs.

Prior to signing of the document, Aqa-Jafari held talks with Burundi Foreign Minister Alain Nyamitwe.

During the meeting also attended by Iran’s Accredited Ambassador to Burundi Seyyed Morteza Mortazavi, the foreign minister of Burundi described his country’s ties with Iran as brotherly and welcomed establishment of the joint political and economic committee.

He also said that the committee will play a crucial in promoting mutual cooperation in all fields, especially scientific, technological, sanitary and economic arenas.

Nyamitwe also voiced his country’s readiness for banking cooperation with Iran and invited Iranian companies for active presence in the country.

Director general of Iran’s Foreign Ministry for African Affairs arrived in Burundi at the end of his regional tour which had earlier brought him to Uganda.
