Pakistan LNG imports from Qatar reach 140,000 cubic metres per month

At present, five cargoes with a combined capacity of around 140,000 cubic metres LNG or 500 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) gas is being imported from Qatar on a monthly basis.

Reports quoting official sources said that the state-owned Pakistan State Oil (PSO) signed a 15-year agreement with Qatar in February 2016 for LNG imports with 76 LNG cargoes bought from Qatar gas so far.

Sources said that Pakistan has no option other than to import gas whether in the form of LNG or through Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project, since the country’s existing reserves are depleting and there has not been a major discovery since a long time.

They expressed confidence that LNG imports will prove to be a game-changer for Pakistan because it is considered an essential part of the energy mix needs of most emerging economies.

President Hassan Rouhani and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi have recently met on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly session in New York during which President Rouhani said that Iran is ready to fulfill energy needs of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Ambassador of Iran to Pakistan Mehdi Honardoost has said that Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline can play a vital role in fulfilling energy requirements of Pakistan.

He said Iran has already done its part in extending the pipeline to the Pakistani border and we are looking forward to Pakistan that it will be completing its part as soon as possible to serve its own national interests.
