In an open session of the parliament on Monday, the MPs approved the proposal to further reinforce the defense capabilities of the Islamic Republic, as a regional power.
According to the law, President Hassan Rouhani’s administration must allocate at least 5% of the public budget to projects aimed at bolstering the country’s defense power.
Earlier this year, the head of the Iranian parliament’s defense committee had stressed the need to boost the country’s defense budget.
“Currently, the country’s defense budget is meager in comparison with some regional countries,” Esmail Kowsari told Tasnim in January, adding that it has to increase.
In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in enhancing its defense capabilities.
Tehran has always assured other nations, though, that its military might poses no threat to the regional countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.Tasnim News Agency - defense
