Daily ‘The News’ said that Iran’s departure from the World Cup will be a relief to teams that might have faced them in the knockout rounds.
Calling Iran football team the Asian powerhouse the paper said that Iran drew their last pool match at 1-1 against Portugal on Monday.
It said that Portuguese coach of Iran Carlos Queiroz, was incensed by the result of the match teeing off at the refereeing of the match.
But Queiroz and Iran should feel hugely proud of their achievements, which included a first World Cup win in 20 years and all but grinding through one of the tournament’s toughest groups.
It added that Iran’s ability to nullify the attacking threat of the Iberian powers may be closely examined by the teams that remain in the tournament.
The paper in its report said Morocco could find no way through the Persian stonewall in a 1-0 loss and neither could Spain.
It further said that Iran’s goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, who slept rough on the streets of Tehran as a junior while pursuing his football dream had also performed very well.
He departed with reputation enhanced, his brilliant save on Ronaldo’s spot-kick a crowning moment in a fine tournament.
