UN chief: Resolution 2231 calls for full implementation of JCPOA

Guterres released his periodic report on the deal to the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday on the basis of the resolution, which requires him to do so every six months.

At the introduction of the report, he recalled that three years ago, China, France, Germany, Russia, the US and EU and Iran reached the nuclear deal, saying that the JCPOA is the zenith of 12-year diplomatic efforts for arriving at a comprehensive and long-term solution.

He further noted that as of January 16, 2016, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported to the UN Security Council that Iran has been in compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA.

Latest report by the agency showed that inspectors have had full access to all the sites necessary for inspection, he said.

Pointing to US unilateral withdrawal from the deal, Guterres said that despite Iran’s compliance with its nuclear commitments, the deal is on the verge of collapse.

Describing the JCPOA as a major achievement which has contributed to regional and international peace and stability, he expressed regret over US exit from the JCPOA.

Issues not related directly with JCPOA should be dealt with separately, he said.

Guterres also hailed Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s letter pointing out that Iran will remain committed to the JCPOA as long as it benefits the Iranian nation.
