Tehran trilateral summit bright horizon for future

The first summit was held in August 2016 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Unlike the 18th and 19th centuries, that were the era of bilateral diplomacy and relations, today's world and the modifying complicated international system have qualitatively changed into the era of multilateral and international diplomacy and interactions.

Although a noticeable portion of diplomatic, political, cultural, and economic relations are still in form of bilateral frameworks, we see more complicated and more developed extra-bilateral (multilateral, regional and international) patterns.

Multilateralism, especially in economy, banking and commerce, has gained supremacy and is growingly expanding; we see various kinds of convergence and regionalism in different geographical areas, such as Southeast Asia, European Union, South and Central America.

However, due to the different structures, the lack of required grounds, the existing tensions, crises and security and political crises, and on top of all, the role of hegemony-seeking extra-regional powers, convergence and multilateralism have not properly emerged in west Asia. Hence, in such a tough complicated situation, holding trilateral meeting between two important Eurasian powers, i.e. Iran and Russia, and an important player in Caucasus, i.e. Azerbaijan, is of great importance.

The trilateral summit in Tehran is a good chance for sharing views and reaching agreements about political, economical and regional issues. Besides talks about North-South Corridor and expansion of the three countries' economic, commercial, and tourism collaborations, the meeting is to include consultation of the three important countries in Eurasia and Caucasus about common challenges and threats such as terrorism.

The meeting is also a good chance for political and security bilateral talks at the highest levels possible. It paves the way for Russia and Iran's presidents' ninth and Iran and Azerbaijan's 10th bilateral meetings in the past four years. The noticeable figures show Iran's eye-catching level of interactions at high levels with the two important neighboring countries.

In the restless atmosphere which is a consequence of new tensions, threats and challenges, including terrorism and environment, on one hand, and some unwise inexperienced leaders, like the US president, on the other hand, necessitate multilateralism and regional convergence more than ever.
