Syria attack due to Washington's displeasure with Astana talk: Iran

Early Saturday morning, US in cooperation with UK and France attacked some targets in Syria under the pretext of alleged a chemical attack near Damascus.

Washington claims that it was a response to an alleged chemical weapon attack near Damascus. The US blames the attack on the government of Syria.

Speaking on the possible effect of the recent attack on the process of resolving Syrian crisis, Bahram Qasemi said that one of the main goals of such hasty and unwise measure by the US and its two European allies against sovereignty of Syria was to create a gap among the three guarantors of Syrian ceasefire that founded the successful Astana talks.

'Maybe they have been unhappy with the achievements of the talks and the recent attack was to create rift among Iran, Russia and Turkey,' he said.

This is an illusion, because the three countries will continue their cooperation in fighting terrorism and protecting Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity, the spokesman said.

Despite some differences between the three countries, consultations on overcoming the differences will be continued, he said.

Commenting on a recent secret visit by a representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Tehran and his meeting with Secretary of the Iran's National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, the spokesman said that the visit was not an unusual event, 'because a number of delegations from Iran and Russia have held talks and been in constant touch with each other on fighting terrorism in the region, particularly on Syria, during the past years.'

It was in the trilateral summit of Iran, Russia and Turkey in Ankara that the presidents of Iran and Russia agreed to have more contacts on the fight against terrorism with regard to Astana talks and Syria's future, he said.

The envoy came to Tehran to discuss the latest developments in the region, Syria and the future process of fighting terrorism and political solutions that can lead to resolving the country's crisis, Qasemi said.
