During a meeting with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, President Maithripala Sirisena said the two countries have enjoyed long-standing friendly relations.
He also referred to his last year's visit to Iran and talks with Iranian officials on energy cooperation.
Zarif, for his part, submitted warm greetings of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and said Tehran is willing to enhance close, friendly relations with Colombo.
He also described the spheres of bilateral cooperation as abundant, with energy, agriculture, technical and engineering engagement at the center.
The two sides also discussed recent regional and international developments.
Foreign Minister Zarif arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday to hold talks with high-ranking officials of the country, before heading to Singapore.
