Members of UN Security Council call for full implementation of JCPOA

US unilateral withdrawal from the Iran Deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and its measure to impose trans-border sanctions on Tehran is against the Resolution 2231 and the UN Charter as well, Gholam Ali Khoshroo told reporters in New York.

About the UN Security Council's meeting held on Wednesday, Khoshroo said it was the Council's first official gathering on the Resolution 2231 after the US exit from the Iran nuclear deal on May 8.

Khoshroo added that the US administration is responsible for the consequences of its unlawful action.

He then stressed that the Council's meeting did display the US political isolation.

Even the US closest allies criticized Washington for its action against the JCPOA and described the Iran Deal as a great diplomatic success, Khoshroo noted.

The new US administration's policies which run counter to the international law are not solely limited to endeavors to damage the Iran Deal, but include Washington's exit from Paris Agreement and its effort to move American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Holy Quds, the Iranian official added.

He went on to say that most of the policies being followed by the US are in line with serving the interests of the Zionist regime of Israel.

Referring to the letter on the US unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA sent by the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to the UN secretary general and the UN Security Council, Khoshroo said the Council's members excluding the United States declared in the Wednesday meeting that Iran has been faithful to its commitments under the 2015 deal and this is what the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed 11 times.

About the details of the UN meeting, Khoshroo said the members of the Security Council expressed concerns over US exit from the Iran Deal, and most of them described Washington's measure to re-impose anti-Iran sanctions as unconstructive.

As long as Iran is committed to the JCPOA, and other countries stress the importance of keeping the deal alive, the unilateral measure by one country is reproachful, Iran's UN representative said.

He further described the UN Security Council as World Cup and the world countries as the players; however, the US wants to be a player and a referee at the same time.

US unilateralism will bring nothing but isolation for Washington and also leads to extremism, Khoshroo said.

Asked why the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has only expressed regret and nothing else about the US withdrawal from the Iran Deal, Khoshroo said the UN report on the Resolution 2231 is not full and comprehensive.

As the Iranian ambassador said, the review of such reports is technical and not under the UN Secretariat mission.

Although the international body expressed deep regret about the issue, Iran believes that the UN chief should not care about the baseless claims made by the third parties, Khoshroo said.

Iran's permanent mission has criticized the context of the UN report on the implementation of the JCPOA, Khoshroo added.

Those minor issues included in the UN June 27 report were declared under the pressure of the US and other countries which are not members of the JCPOA and are only after finding pretext, Khoshroo concluded.

UN chief on Wednesday deplored US withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, saying that Resolution 2231 orders full implementation of the deal by all the parties and its support by regional and international institutions.
