Lebanese journalist: Trump policy on Iran threat and opportunity

'Despite creating some problems and imposing pressures, Trump's policies provide countries with an opportunity to seriously think about setting up mechanisms to address the US unilateralism,' Sami Kleib told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) during an inclusive interview.

'Trump look at all countries in the world as bags of money,' Kleib said, describing the US president as the leader of the same project the American Neo-conservative administration of George W. Bush was trying to carry out.

'It is the same project suspended during the presidency of Barack Obama but revived with Trump in the office,' he said.

However, the Lebanese political analyst said, Iran's foreign relations are not restricted to just the US, as the country maintains important ties with Europe, Russia and China.

It is true that implementation of the Iran Deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), did improve economic conditions in Iran and made it possible for the country to do banking transactions and enter new agreements, it is not a decisive deal, Kleib said.

'If I were Iran's decision-makers, I would offer the alternative [to the deal] to its people and the world,' he said.

Everybody should know about this alternative, and if Iran fails to offer such an alternative, it will be catastrophic as Iran will be forced to engage in talks preconditioned by the US, he added.

'Iran has demonstrated that it is capable of conducting high-level talks and do them from a position of power,' he said.

That is why I think, Iran should not let doors be closed on it and widen its ties with Europe, China and Russia.

Answering a question on possible guarantees the European Union can provide for Iran on the JCPOA, the prominent Lebanese journalist and political analyst said that EU is facing an array of problems.

'The Europeans have big problems in dealing with the United States. As you know, Trump pulled out US from the Paris environment agreement and increased tariffs on European-made imported commodities. And in both cases, the EU was quite helpless,' Kleib said.

'That is why, I think, Europe cannot successfully address Iran's nuclear issue in the face of the US,' he said.

'What European countries can do is extending the process of negotiations for Trump to change his decision or to wait for his term in the office to terminate,' he added.

So it is wrong to thing that Europe will stand against Washington, he stressed.
