Kurdistan referendum, conspiracy to destabilize region: Pak ex-envoy

In an interview with IRNA, Air Marshal (Retd) Sayed Qaiser Hussain termed the referendum as illegal and against the Constitution of Iraq.

Former vice Chief of Air Staff added that there is no doubt that Zionist Regime with the support of some western powers is behind this all activity.

He added that Kurd people are residing in Iran, Turkey and Syria so western powers are backing referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan to destabilize this region.

The diplomat expressing his views said that the development could have negative impacts on this area and governments of Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria should sit together and find a unified solution to this problem.

Sayed Qaiser Hussain said that people of Iraqi Kurdistan should start a dialog with the government of Iraq and stop pursuing a path which could create instability in the area. “United Iraq is in the interest of Kurd people,” he noted.

He regretted that when Daesh has almost been defeated in Syria and Iraq the issue of Kurdistan has emerged. “I fear that this move could trigger a civil war in Iraq,” he warned.

The expert on regional affairs went on to say that a special conference of the OIC should be called on this issue and all Muslim countries should find a unified solution to this problem.

The analyst said that Kurd people must not become tools in the hands of western powers and should not take any step which could endanger their existence.

Sayed Qaiser Hussain added that Pakistan should also come up with a strong voice in support of Iraqi government against the illegal referendum.

The Kurds, who have ruled over an autonomous region within Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, held a referendum on September 25 despite strong opposition of Baghdad.

Iran and major European countries strongly opposed the decision to hold the referendum, which they described as destabilizing at a time when all sides are still fighting against Daesh terrorists.
