Iraq's 1st Kurdish president passes away

Talabani was secretary of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) of Iraq and had a unifying role in the country after the ouster of former Iraqi dictator and establishment of new Iraqi federal system.

Talabani was an Iraqi Kurdish politician who served as the sixth president of Iraq from 2005 to 2014, as well as the president of the Governing Council of Iraq (39th Prime Minister of Iraq). He is known as 'Ma'am Jalal' meaning 'uncle Jalal' among Kurdish people.
