
Valid al-Helli, an advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi slammed the attack on Iranian mission and said that a number of attackers have been detained.
He said that investigations would continue to find those behind the attack.
The Iranian envoy, for his part, sympathized with the Iraqi people, in particular the people in Basra, and expressed the hope for resolution of their problems.
He also called for referring to Iraqi judiciary, those who are guilty for the attack on Iranian diplomatic mission.
The new round of protests which erupted in Basra over contaminated water and unemployment turned violent quickly leading to clashes between protestors and security forces. According to Iraqi health ministry, 11 people have been killed and over 100 others wounded in the clashes.
The organizers of the protests have announced that some elements affiliated to the Baath party and Daesh terrorist group had attacked and torched government buildings, including Iranian consulate, in the city.
