Iraq not US center for plotting against Iran: Islamic Supreme Court

Iraq will not be turned into a place for organizing conspiracies against the Islamic Republic of Iran, Majed Ghammas told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

Referring to the five-day trip of the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to Iraq, Ghammas said that it was an important visit which took place in a sensitive situation.

Zarif’s travel to the Iraqi cities of Baghdad, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Karbala and Najaf started on January 13. In Iraq, the Iranian foreign minister held talks with top Iraqi officials and attended the Tehran-Baghdad economic commission meeting.

According to Ghammas, the US and its partners in the region are taking suspicious movements towards isolating Iran and preparing the ground for inflicting harm on the Axis of Resistance.

He further called for adopting a unified policy on the regional issues, preventing foreigners from interfering in the regional affairs and not letting the hegemonic systems be created in the region.

Zarif’s visit was very important regarding these issues, he said.

Elaborating on the meetings held between Zarif and the officials at the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Ghammas said travel of the Iranian foreign minister to Erbil took place within the framework of [preservation of] Iraq’s unity.

Touching upon bilateral cooperation between Iraq and Iran, the Iraqi official said economic relations between the two countries should be strengthened in order to foil enemy plots.

He said, the enemies are making efforts to separate Iraq from the Resistance, stressing their dream will never come true.

Pointing to Zarif’s talks with senior Iraqi politician Ayad Allawi, Ghammas said the meeting was of benefit to both sides.

Allawi so far has not had such a meeting with top Iranian officials, the Iraqi official added.

Ghammas, speaking about US efforts to put pressure on Iran through neighbors, said the Iraqi government is determined not to let the neighboring countries, Iran in particular, be in harm's way.

He went on to say that the American officials are trying to persuade Iraq not to cooperate with Iran in the economic areas of gas and electricity.

However, Baghdad has not agreed with the US, he stressed.

Although there are some banking problems in terms of US dollar, Iraqi government believe that no disruptive move should be taken in Iraq against the Islamic Republic of Iran, he said.

Ghammas also called for removing obstacles to bilateral ties and holding regular meetings between businessmen of Iran and Iraq.
