Iran proposes creating Caspian Sea media committees

In order to foster more profound cooperation and coordination among the media entities in the Caspian Sea region it would be appropriate, if each of the five Caspian littoral states set up their own media committees, Alireza Shiravi said Friday in the Caspian Sea media forum held in Astrakhan and attended by representatives from Iran, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Russia.

Shiravi referred to the Caspian Sea as the sea of peace and friendship, saying good media cooperation among the Caspian littoral states will decrease vulnerability to unfavorable media campaigns and will prepare new opportunities.

The deputy director general for foreign correspondents affairs at Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance also urged all sides to create convergence among themselves and promote media solidarity.

Shiravi said the Caspian Sea littoral states that are trying to establish a legal regime for the region, all call for fighting narcotics and crimes in the Caspian Sea region and they are looking for developing media, economic, cultural and scientific cooperation.

An Iranian delegation from Gilan and Golestan provinces attended the two-day meeting in the Russian southern city of Astrakhan.

'The purpose of the event is to discuss the role and activities of the Tehran Convention and its Protocols as an effective mechanism for achieving environmentally sustainable development of the Caspian Sea region taking into account the UN Sustainable Development Goals,' according to UN Environment website.

'Caspian littoral states have gathered in Astrakhan to celebrate Caspian Sea Day and the 2017 Year of the Environment in Russia.'
