Iran president advisor congratulates new Jewish year

Special Assistant to the President of Iran for Ethnic and Religious Minorities' Affairs Ali Younesi in its message released on Saturday noted that Jews have thousands of years of history in Iran.

The official said when the Jews were not enjoying security and freedom across the globe, Iran was a safe and peaceful place for their residence and this is the reason why they chose to live here.

He urged followers of all religions to help spread peace, justice and hope around the globe.

Thousands of Jews live in Iran, mostly in Tehran, but also in Isfahan and Shiraz, major cities south of the capital.

Iran’s Jewish community is one of the three officially recognized religious minorities and has a lawmaker in the parliament. Armenian Christians have two MPs, while Assyrian-Chaldeans and Zoroastrians have one each.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. It is a two-day celebration, which begins on the first day of Tishrei. Tishrei is the first month of the Jewish civil year, but the seventh month of the ecclesiastical year.
