Iran calls on sovereign states to comply with ICJ ruling

Gholam-Ali Khoshroo made the remarks at the UN General Assembly on Thursday in reference to the ICJ ruling (October 3) that stipulated the US has violated its obligations through re-imposing sanctions on Iran.

The International Court of Justice is the main judicial body of the United Nations that settles the disputes among member states according to the international law and gives advisory information on queries referred to it from the UN and specialized agencies.

Khoshroo also noted that Washington's unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal is in violation of the UN Security Council resolutions.

The US President Donald Trump, after pulling out of the deal in May, re-imposed the sanctions on Iran that were supposed to be lifted under the deal.

He has also pressed the US allies to stop doing business with Iran in line with the sanctions; otherwise they will be affected by secondary sanctions.

The Iranian representative said that it is disastrous that Washington is punishing sovereign countries because they are complying with the UN Security Council resolutions.

Referring to the ICJ ruling, Khoshroo said the judiciary body unanimously announced the illegality of the US sanctions and ordered that Washington must remove any impediment arising from the measures announcing its withdrawal from the agreement.
