Int’l community needs to counter US policy of unilateralism

First Deputy Foreign Minister Mortez Sarmadi conveyed President Hassan Rouhani’s written message to Cuban vice president in the absence of the country’s president.

During the meeting, Sarmadi highlighted the international standing of Iran nuclear deal, saying that US violation of the deal threatens the world’s peace and stability.

Simultaneous continuation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and sanctions is impossible, he said.

“JCPOA is the outcome of serious and precise talks between Iran and 5+1 Group and a multilateral agreement aimed at addressing concerns about proliferation and removing all restrictions and economic pressures exerted on Iran on the grounds of its nuclear program,” Sarmadi said.

Warning about the dangerous consequences of US destructive approach in the international scene, the special envoy said that a strong resolve is needed to counter such an approach, as it requires global cooperation in the field.

Cuban Vice President Ricardo Cabrisas, for his part, described US exit from the JCPOA as an act against global peace, highlighting Iran’s rightful stance regarding the international pact.

The two officials also discussed avenues for promoting bilateral cooperation in various fields as well as latest developments in Middle East and Latin America and other issues of mutual interest.

In a separate meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla, Sarmadi said that current international conditions are harder than ever for independent countries.

Policy of unilateralism adopted by the US is a major factor for proving righteousness of independent states against excessive demands of US and its domineering policies, he said.

The Cuban foreign minister also confirmed Iran’s principled stances regarding the JCPOA and condemned US unilateral withdrawal from the deal.

Compliance with the international accords is a basic element in the global community, stressing that governments cannot call into question international deals by their own will, he said.

Sarmadi hailed Cuba’s position in support of the JCPOA, calling for collective mechanism across the world for countering US destructive approach.
