Gov't spox: White House should be accountable to its public opinion

Talking to reporters, Mohammad-Baqer Nobakht dismissed US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s allegations against Iran, adding that President Hassan Rouhani immediately announced the Islamic Republic's legal stance in this respect.

Despite being under international sanctions, the Islamic Republic is the 18th big economy of the world according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) latest reports, he added.

Pompeo in a speech on Monday (May May 22) said that following the withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, the US is seeking severe financial pressure and unprecedented sanctions against Iran to contain Islamic Republic’s influence in the region and block its nuclear and missile programs.

Reacting to Pompeo remarks, President Rouhani said the new US administration got the country back to 15 years ago, saying that maybe the Americans do something by force but it is illogical that they make decisions for the world.

“Americans have found that the words uttered during the tenure of junior Bush were wrong and took step to modify the situation, but some have come to repeat them,” he said, noting that the world will surely not agreed to the US making decisions on behalf of all countries.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also in a message condemned Pompeo’s claims, saying “US diplomacy sham is merely a regression to old habits: imprisoned by delusions & failed policies—dictated by corrupt Special Interest—it repeats the same wrong choices and will thus reap the same ill rewards. Iran, meanwhile, is working with partners for post-US JCPOA solutions.”
