EU envoy to occupied lands defends JCPOA

The JCPOA stands for Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the official name of the agreement reached between Iran and six world major powers in 2015 to give Tehran sanctions relief in return for scaling back its nuclear program.

Giaufret further noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has so far released 10 reports verifying Iran’s full adherence to its commitments under the deal.

The agreement is based on the most complete and stronger verification system that a nuclear regime has so far witnessed, he argued.

Although many believe that the agreement is not comprehensive, it creates guarantees and assurances, as it is based on unity among global community, he said.

EU’s support to JCPOA takes place at a time when US President Donald Trump has called on the European parties to fix what he has called flaws of the agreement until May 12, when he is slated to express his viewpoint on nuclear sanctions waiver.

The European official maintained that pulling out of JCPOA and restoring anti-Iran sanctions will undermine the 2015 nuclear deal.

It took multiple years to clinch the agreement and now setting it aside is wrong, as it works and worth being preserved, he said.

Referring to recent claims by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Iran’s nuclear program, Giaufret said that the issue raised recently should be examined by the experts but now there is no sign denoting Iran’s non-compliance with the deal.

Netanyahu recently claimed Israel has obtained 'Iran’s secret files' which reveal Tehran is still pursuing nuclear weapons program secretly even after the JCPOA came into effect.

The statements met with wide-scale global response, as many countries and international organizations rejected Netanyahu’s claims.
