EU calls for truce in Syria's eastern Ghouta

'Unhindered humanitarian access and the protection of civilians is a moral duty and a matter of urgency ... the fighting must stop now,' the EU said on Saturday in its statement agreed by all 28 of the bloc's governments.

The European Union urged the war parties and the truce guarantors to take the necessary measures for an immediate ceasefire and access for aid trucks in Syria's eastern Ghouta.

The statement also said that no dispute has military solutions and the war parties should enter a political procedure under the UN.

The UN Security Council is to put to vote a draft resolution submitted by Sweden and Kuwait on the 30-day cessation of hostilities in Syria on Saturday.

Some areas in eastern Ghouta are still home to takfiri terrorists through which they attack residential areas in Damascus, a clear breach of truce agreements signed between the Syrian government and the opposition.
