Chinese official urges parties to save nuclear deal

'All parties should try to save the deal from collapse, and it requires all signatories to defend it firmly and implement the deal,' said Yao Yunzhu from Chinese People's Liberation Army top research institution, the Academy of Military Science (AMS).

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (the US, France, Britain, China, and Russia) plus Germany signed the nuclear deal in 2015. Iran accepted to curb its nuclear program in exchange for economic sanctions relief.

The US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in May, calling it the worst deal ever. Washington has also re-imposed the economic sanctions the first set of which will take effect on August 6.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on the sidelines of the 7th World Peace Forum in China , the Chinese official said, 'China, Russia and Europe are trying to remain committed to their obligation under the nuclear deal.'

The retired Chinese Major General said that the US not only has withdrawn from the deal, but it has also tried to impede its implementation by other parties.

She also noted that if Europe does not defend the deal, keeping it alive would not be an easy task for Russia and China.

The 7th World Peace Forum was held July 14-15 at the Tsinghua University, Beijing.
