Beijing will safeguard JCPOA under any conditions: Official

Under the deal officially known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran got relief from international sanctions in return for scaling back its nuclear program.

Addressing the Conference on Iran-China International Nuclear Cooperation in Beijing, he said that the two countries’ cooperation in the field of nuclear energy is a source of pleasure, as it will help promote mutual nuclear cooperation and help the two sides achieve further success in implementing JCPOA.

Wang, who represented China in 2015 nuclear talks, said that using nuclear energy is a strategic option for the Chinese government and it will cooperate with other countries in the field of peaceful development of nuclear energy.

He further pointed out that the Chinese president’s visit to Iran in 2016 heralded a new chapter in bilateral ties, saying that the two countries have signed a MoU in the field of nuclear energy.

Non-military nuclear cooperation is a major section of JCPOA, which gives Iran the right to use peaceful nuclear energy, he said, noting that China appreciates Iran’s attempts to develop nuclear security and considers Iran’s collaboration with the international institutes effective.

“China is ready to implement JCPOA and it will have close cooperation with Iran and the US in the field of modernizing Arak heavy water reactor,” the official said, ensuring that his country will comply with its commitments to advance the project and supply equipment.

Irrespective of whatever happens, China will implement its part of JCPOA and will adopt a responsible behavior towards the deal, he said, reiterating that it will also encourage other parties to safeguard it.

Describing JCPOA as a precious asset which should be preserved, Wang said that JCPOA put an end to a crisis and it is a historic and unparalleled agreement which serves as an example for diplomatic settlement of disputes.

JCPOA is a model recognized by the international community and verified by UN Security Council, he said.

The Conference on Iran-China International Nuclear Cooperation was held in Beijing on Wednesday with senior officials of the nuclear organizations and representatives of 5+1 Group in attendance.
