Azerbaijan, 3rd major trade partner of Iran in region

Speaking to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Pakaeen referred to the strategic ties between the two countries and said the Iranian and Azeri presidents have met each other ten times since 2013. The meetings between President Hassan Rouhani and President Elham Aliyev have been effective in the implementation of agreements reached between the two sides, he added.

The ex-ambassador said Tehran-Baku ties are going to turn into strategic relations and thanks to the friendship between the two presidents and their constant meetings, joint measures have been taken with regards to economic and security cooperation particularly in the fight against terrorism.

The Islamic Republic sees no limits on expansion of cooperation and strengthening of all-out ties with the Republic of Azerbaijan, Pakaeen said.

The veteran diplomat said both countries share close stands on issues related to the security and stability of the region and are quite aware of the importance of bilateral, trilateral, quadrilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Given the political will of both presidents for securing the long-term interests of the Iranian and Azeri nations, making use of opportunities and confronting threats can be a symbol of a win-win diplomacy, Pakaeen said.

The two countries can also discuss and cooperate in such fields as the Caspian Sea legal regime, transportation, energy security and joint campaign against terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking, he said.
