The European Union had assumed that by giving concessions, either on Iran's part or on its own, it could convince Trump to give up opposing the nuclear deal, he said in an exclusive interview with the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Friday.
'It took too long for the EU to realize that Trump does not care about the efforts and is seeking to tear up the deal,' he said.
The three European signatories of the nuclear agreement with Iran—Britain, France and Germany—known as EU3, have not made enough effort to defend the deal, and their current stance is a too-late-response to Donald Trump's counter-productive policies, Trita Parsi, the head of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC) said.
US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal in May, calling it the worst deal ever.
'Now, for Europe, defending the JCPOA is not merely a matter of saving the deal; rather it means its independence and resistance against what is increasingly getting more evident; they have come up with the fact that Trump sees Europe as an enemy,' he said.
Commenting on the recent visit by Iran's President Hassan Rouhani to Switzerland and Austria, despite the pressures by the White House to isolate Iran, the analyst said, 'The visit is an indication that both Iran and the EU are trying to grab all opportunities available to them to save the deal.'
But the good will does not suffice, he said, adding that there should also be a political will for resistance since the rivalry between Trump and Europe is expected to last long.
