Ismail Baqai, head of executive committee of the nuclear deal at Iran's Foreign Ministry, is leading the Iranian expert team in the meeting.
The nuclear deal (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) was signed by Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council—the US, UK, France, Russia, China—plus Germany in 2015. Washington withdrew from the deal in May.
The last expert meeting of the Joint Commission after the US withdrawal was held prior to the meeting of deputy foreign ministers of the remaining signatories in Vienna two weeks ago.
It is likely that a date will be determined for the foreign ministers meeting in this session upon Iran's request.
The topic of the expert meeting, particularly between Iran and the European countries, is to devise a mechanism for implementing the JCPOA without the US so that Iran can enjoy most of its trade and economic benefits from sanctions relief.
Recently, the foreign and finance ministers of the UK, France and Germany have written to their American counterparts reiterating their commitment to preserve the deal.
In their joint letter, they have asked the US government to exempt the European firms that have invested in Iran after the nuclear deal from its sanctions.
