Qeshm Island to host Int'l Geoparks Conference

'The meeting which aims at developing Iranian, regional and international geoparks will be held on February 6-8, 2018,' The Managing Director of Qeshm Free Area Organization Hamidreza Momeni said on Saturday.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will visit those areas which are capable of becoming geoparks, he said.

A Geopark is a unified area that advances the protection and use of geological heritage in a sustainable way, and promotes the economic well-being of the people who live there.

There are Global Geoparks and National Geoparks.

Qeshm Geopark has been registered as the Middle East geopark in Global Geoparks Network (GGN) since March 21, 2006.

The Global Geoparks Network (GGN) is a UNESCO assisted network established in 1998. Managed under the body’s Ecological and Earth Sciences Division, the GGN seeks the promotion and conservation of the planet’s geological heritage, as well as encourages the sustainable research and development by the concerned communities.
