Pakistan dismisses US opposition regarding IMF bailout package

Addressing media in Islamabad, he said Pompeo has tried to link IMF package to Pakistan to pay Chinese debts, which is not proper for him.

The Foreign Minister said Chinese President Xi Jinping sees Pakistan as an iron brother of his country and there is no need to intervene in this relationship by any quarters.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had issued some warning words over Chinese involvement in Pakistan, shedding light on what could be another growing point of contention between the world’s two largest economies.

Haroon said that the new elected government would have to decide whether to approach the IMF amid fears of a balance of payments crisis.

However, he also dismissed as ‘inappropriate’ comments by the US secretary of state voicing concerns over any IMF bailout being used to repay Chinese loans to Islamabad.

Haroon said that the Pakistani government is determined to complete China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects and that 'there is absolutely no reason for anyone to intervene in the [China-Pakistan] relationship'.

“The CPEC is totality linked with the progress and prosperity of Pakistan and it will be ensured that all the projects are completed within their time frame,” he reiterated.

Haroon said why the US is not speaking about helping the new government in Pakistan. He added that Pakistan expected other countries to respect its sovereignty, integrity and solidarity.

Pakistan had paid a heavy price in the long war on terror and astonishingly, it was being asked to do more, he said and referred to the military operations in North and South Waziristan districts.

'Those who ask us to do more should consider what their own role has been (in the war),' he said.

Haroon said, “The government is fully committed to undertake and complete CPEC projects in their totality.”

He also asked how relations between the US and Pakistan can improve when the Financial Action Task Force is throttling Pakistan's neck.

Yet, the foreign minister added, Pakistan is ready to talk to both its eastern and western neighbors for the betterment of the region.
