Namibian FM urges enhancing economic ties with Iran

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said that the meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif was aimed at 'enhancing the good ties between the two countries'.

Nandi-Ndaitwah, also the Foreign Minister of Namibia, met his Iranian counterpart on Friday the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

We decided to enhance cooperation pursuing the sustainable development goals in order to address poverty and underdevelopment in our countries, according to him.

Agriculture, healthcare, Information and communication technologies (ICT), and mining are the main fields for bilateral cooperation, the Namibian official said.

Pointing to the history of Iran-Namibia ties, he said that the relations between the two countries were established 'even before Namibia's independence, when the country's people were fighting for independence'.

'Iran was among the countries that supported Namibia's independence through backing leaders of the South West African People's Organization (SWAPO),' he said.

Namibia, home to more than 2 million people, lies in souhtern Africa. It gained independence from South Africa in 1990.
