Minister: Turkey expects US to extend Iran sanctions waiver

“We expect an extension of Turkey’s exemption” from sanctions, Pekcan said in an interview with NTV in Ankara. She was referring to the temporary waiver that allowed Turkey to continue buying Iranian oil for six months, Bloomberg reported.

Pekcan also expects a removal of additional tariffs the US imposed on some Turkish products. “We’ve been receiving positive signals in our talks,” she said, without elaborating.
Following the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement in May, Washington reimposed unilateral sanctions against Tehran.

US sanctions on Iran have “endangered the security and stability of the region,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Ankara on Dec. 20, speaking at a press conference with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. The two nations are working to minimize the impact of sanctions on bilateral trade, he said.

Despite the US pressure on Turkey to minimize its trade with Iran, Tehran and Ankara have agreed to step up their economic cooperation with the aim of reaching a $ 30-billion target set for their annual trade.

During Erdogan-Rouhani meeting, both neighbors called for closer bilateral relations in all areas, especially economy, politics and fight against terrorism.

They believe enhanced ties between the countries will contribute to the region’s peace and stability.

The two sides also criticized Washington’s decision to scrap the 2015 multilateral deal on the Iranian nuclear program – officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – in defiance of UN Security Council resolution 2231, which has endorsed the international document.

They also expressed concerns over the unilateral sanctions that the US reinstated against Iran, saying the unfair restrictive measures could harm innocent people and leave a negative impact on regional economic relations.
