Minister blames Turkey for Iraq's water shortage

Al-Janabi made the remarks in an interview with the Iraqi state-owned Al-Sabah daily newspaper in reaction to the recent claims on Iran's role in closing the rivers flowing into Iraq.

Some 70% of the water resources of Tigris and Euphrates rivers comes from Turkey and the rest comes from Syria, the official said, noting that Iran has an insignificant share in this regard.

He urged the need to sign long-term agreements with Ankara on determining the water share of Iraq, considering that the main sources of Tigris and Euphrates rivers are in Turkey.
