Iran produces 120 new medicines under sanctions

'Forty of the new products are chemical, 40 herbal and the rest biological types of medicines and raw materials,' said Mehdi Pirsalehi.

Pirsalehi added the domestic production provides 70 percent of the need of the country and 30 percent are still imported.

He also added that the imported items are prioritized to be produced by Iranian companies and that 180 pharmaceutical companies are making medicines in Iran.

Pirsalehi said that the medicine shortage is unavoidable and even the countries that are not sanctioned may have to deal with shortages.

He went on to say that the medicine market in the country is under control and Iran suffers from shortage of only 21 medicinal items.
