Iran has one of most powerful shipping fleet in world

Iranian shipping fleet is one of the most powerful ones both in oil tanker and cargo shipping, Hamid Baeedinejad said on the sidelines of the 30th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

'Some 80% of cargo transfers are transferred via sea in the word,' he said.

Meanwhile, Head of Ports and Maritime Organization Mohammad Rastad who is the head of Iranian delegation to IMO told reporters that Iran is an important country because it has long coasts, various ports and also considerable trade fleet.

Rastad is supposed to deliver a speech in IMO tomorrow. His speech is supposed to be about the first phase of Iran's Chabahar Port which is scheduled to be inaugurated next week.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), known as the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) until 1982, is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping.

The IMO was established in Geneva in 1948 and came into force ten years later, meeting for the first time in 1959. Headquartered in London, the IMO has 172 member states and three associate members.
