Iran EU route highly economical for India: Former diplomat

'India currently uses the Suez Canal waterway to access Europe, but by using the route passing through Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Russia and Georgia to reach Europe, the country will significantly reduce the costs and save time of transferring goods to Europe,' Ebrahim Rahimpour told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) in an exclusive interview on Sunday.

'By using the Iran route, India will be able to transfer significant amount of commodities,' Rahimpour said.

Referring to President Hassan Rouhani's recent three-day trip to India taking place two years after a similar visit by the India's Prime Minister Narendra Mod to Iran, he said that we need to enhance our relations with India.

Cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi is a win-win game, he added.

Full-fledged economic engagement between the two nations needs time to develop, he said.
