Iran, Belarus discuss expansion of bilateral cooperation

The two sides also reiterated the need for strengthening cooperation between Minsk Region and Tehran Province and promoting relations between the people of both countries.

Referring to the background of cooperation between Tehran Province and Minsk Region, the Iranian ambassador said there were new plans on mutual cooperation including one for export of new cars produced by Iranian automaker, Iran Khodro Industrial Group (IKCO) in cooperation with Belarusian automotive company Unison.

He also pointed to the joint production of electric buses by Iranian and Belarusian companies and said Iran plans to import red meat from Belarus.

Isachenko, for his part, said the Minsk Region has had cooperation with 72 countries in various fields and welcomes collaboration with Tehran Province. He said inviting the governor general of Tehran Province to visit Minsk is on the agenda.

The 14th session of Iran-Belarus Joint Economic Commission was held last year, attended by Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mohammad Shariatmadari and Belarusian Industries Minister Vital Vouk. Eight cooperation documents were inked at the end of the session.

Belarus with an area of 207,600 square meters and a population of 10 million is located in Eastern Europe bordering Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania. It gained its independence following the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991.
