Int'l transport corridors to upgrade Iran Port City of Chabahar

'Launching the international transport corridors, including the North-South and East-West Corridors could play a significant role in development of Sistan and Balouchestan Province,' said Gholamreza Mdjidi-nejad Yazdi Deputy Governor General of the Iranian southeastern province.

The launching of the corridors could boost transit of goods and passengers, Mdjidi-nejad said, adding that the East-West Corridor, or the old Silk Road, links China to Central Asia through Iran.

This is while, he said, the railroad linking Chabahar to the City of Sarakhs in Razavi Khorasan Province northwest of Iran, is expected to increase the activity of the port city in the Persian Gulf.

In the meantime, the director general of the Ports and Maritime Organization in Sistan and Balouchestan, described the Sea of Oman and Makran Coasts as an untapped treasure.

Behrouz Aqaee, referring to the trilateral agreement between Iran, India and Afghanistan to develop the Port City, emphasized attracting investments and speeding up the launching of international transport corridors.

The presence of various big industries in the region, including petrochemical, steel and auto industries, promise a bright future for Chabahar.
