“The fact that Afghanistan has used the Chabahar Port for the first time to export its goods has opened a new chapter in developing political, economic and commercial relations,” Iranian Roads and Urban Development Minister Mohammad Eslami told reporters on the sideline of the Chabahar Day ceremony which was a big international event aimed at attracting foreign investment for Iran’s oceanic port.
“The Afghan goods transit via Chabahar is a turning point in kickstarting the trilateral Chabahar agreement,” added Eslami, referring to the arrival of the first cargo of Afghan commodities, destined for India, to Chabahar Port.
The Iranian minister said Chabahar’s strategic location not only links East with West but also reduces the transit and transport costs.
The Iranian port, located in the south-eastern Sistan and Baluchestan Province, is the most important connection bridge at the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a multi-modal land, sea and raid transit that connects South East Asia to Central Asia and Europe.
Chabahar’s Shahid Beheshti Port, that is being developed and operated by Indians under a 10-year lease, has the capacity to load and unload eight and a half million tons of cargo per day. The port’s capacity is expected to increase to 77 million tons daily, according to the official.
