'The two victims were siblings that were manipulating an unexploded shell in Sheikh Seleh village in Kermanshah Province that caused a blast,' Kermanshah deputy governor Mohammad-Ebrahim Elahitabar told Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
The brother was killed as the result of the blast, and the sister was transferred to a hospital, he said.
The village had been the target of several chemical attacks during the war of the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein on Iran.
A major concern of the inhabitants of the border region is that some of the unexploded munitions remained from the war era have been moved to other parts through floods, landslides and soil erosion.
The former Iraqi regime during the eight-year war planted some 16 million landmines in an area of 200,000 hectares of Iranian territories, which have so far claimed many lives.
