UK PM: Ramadan represents value of peace

'Ramadan represents the universal values of peace, reflection, devotion and charity. To all Muslims in the UK and across the world: Ramadan Kareem,' the Official channel for Prime Minister Theresa May's office wrote in its Twitter account.

Earlier, First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon in a separate message said: 'Wishing #RamadanMubarak to all my Muslim friends and constituents.'

She added: 'ALL over the world, Muslims are preparing for the start of Ramadan, it's the holiest month in the Islamic calendar and it will be observed this year, as it is every year through fasting, prayer and reflection.'

Meamwhile earlier, Leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn in a message said: 'As #Ramadan begins, I would like to wish Muslims in our country and around the world.'

Some Arab states, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar, Lebanon and Libya have declared Monday (May 6) as the first day of fasting month of Ramadhan.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar. During Ramadan, observant Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn to dusk.
