Twin quakes jolt southern Iran

According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, Ruydar in Hormozgan Province was hit on 9:34:46 am local time (5:04:46) by a magnitude 4.7 quake that was followed by another tremor of magnitude 5.7 some three minutes later.

The two earthquakes occurred in the depths of 22 and 8 kilometers, respectively.

Provincial Disaster Management authority, Ali-Reza Safa, told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) that rescue teams have been deployed to the region.

The quakes' epicenter is an area bordering Fars and Hormozgan Provinces, he said.

Ruydar is 130 kilometers to west of Bandar-Abbas, provincial capital of Hormozgan.

There was no immediate report of casualties or damage so far, the head of Iran's Emergency Medical Services, Pir-Hossein Kowlivand, said.
