Mayor: Tehran’s historic street on UNESCO’s temporary list

Pirouz Hanachi told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Tuesday that Vali-e Asr Street had been earlier been registered as a national heritage.

He said that this is the first step to have the street to be globally registered, noting that the required documents have been submitted to UNESCO Secretariat.

Global registration of this street may take place in 2020, he said, noting that Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization is pursuing the case.

Golestan Palace complex, one of the oldest groups of buildings in downtown Tehran, is the only monument in the Iranian capital to be included in the UNESCO's World Heritage List.

A total of 26 sites in Iran have so far been registered on UNESCO’s global heritage list.
