Liposuction, not a proper method to lose weight: Iranian plastic surgeon

Speaking to the Tehran-based English language newspaper Iran Daily, Ali Bijani added prior to surgery for fat removal, people are required to consult specialists about the possible side effects of the operation.

He underlined, “Only physicians who have specialized in plastic and aesthetic surgeries are permitted to perform such surgical operations. Of course, other physicians can also perform the surgeries once they have passed relevant courses approved by Ministry of Health and Medical Education.”

To lose weight, Bijani said, fat people are primarily advised to try a diet, adding, “However, in some parts of the body, the accumulated fat is more resistant and harder to burn off, since it does not react to diets and physical exercises. Surgical operations such as liposuction can help remove the fat from these parts.”

He said all kinds of surgeries have side effects, some of which are caused as a result of operations conducted by non-specialized physician.

Bijani added that however, specialized surgeons are well aware of the probable side effects of the operations they perform and, thus, prior to the surgery, they can work out methods to minimize their number in the post-operation period.

“They also inform their patients about the possible side effects of the surgeries they are about to undergo.”

He listed some of the most common plastic and aesthetic surgeries in Iran as rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), abdominoplasty, breast prosthesis, reduction mammoplasty, cheek augmentation as well as face and forehead lift.

Commenting on the most common age for a facelift surgery, Bijani said, “There is no particular age range for this particular surgical operation. Psychological pressures and stress may force an individual to undergo the operation at the age of 30. This is while, other older people, above 60, may not require a surgery as they have better skins. In general, individuals mostly opt for such operations after the age of 50.”

Elaborating on blepharoplasty, he noted that people normally have the operation at advanced ages as their eyelids droop due to a number of disorders that develop in the area around the eye.

“However, a few percentage of people happen to be suffering from ptosis from infancy for whom blepharoplasty would be a reconstructive and therapeutic surgery and not an aesthetic operation as the disorder may obscure their vision.”

He said genetic and geographical factors as well as the climate all impact the health condition of an individual’s skin.

“Excessive exposure to sunlight, high stress and inadequate sleep are the other factors that can damage a person’s skin. I recommend that people refrain from using different kinds of ointments and lotions except sun protection creams and moisturizers.”

Bijani said an Iranian plastic and aesthetic surgeon, Bahman Ghaiouran, has invented a method to treat migraine employing the techniques used in aesthetic surgeries.

“He realized that in the process of the surgery to help people get rid of their frown line, deactivating the muscles around the eyes helps relieve headache in those suffering from migraine. He, later, managed to locate three other nervous points on the head that cause the disorder. To treat migraine, Ghaiouran depends on the source of the pain on patients’ head, removes the related nerves.”
