Linz festival blows candles for Iran's 'Birthday Night'

The film narrates the story of two friends and business partners, Ahmad and Ali, who face dramatic situation on their birthday night. They learn more about each other since then.

'Birthday Night' had previously won the Best of the Fest Award at the 2018 Short Sweet Film Festival in the US.

Linz is the first international short film festival in the Upper Austrian city, established for 'showcasing and celebrating the best independent short films from already established filmmakers as well as great work from new upcoming talents and artists from all around the world'.

According to its website, the event focuses on 'finding diverse independent films with strong characters and storylines, from filmmakers who share their visions in a powerful, creative and entertaining way'.

The award-winning Iranian screenwriter and filmmaker Farnoosh Samadi was a member of the panel of jury at the Austrian film event. Other members were Romanian director Sorin Dorian Dragoi and Italian animator Lucia Bulgheroni.

The three-member jury panel judged more than 100 short films in various sections of the festival including animation, documentary and experimental.

Samadi's latest work, the short film 'Gaze', premiered this summer in the 70th Lorcano Festival in Italy. It also won the Grand Jury Award for best live action short film in the 31st American Film Institute Festival last November.
