The tremor occurred at 23:42 hours local time (20:42 GMT). The epicenter of the quake was registered at 56.28 degrees longitude and 27.36 degrees latitude and in depth of 11 kilometers.

No report on possible damage to life or properties has been released yet, but rescue teams have been deployed to the area.

Iran sits on major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.
