Lake Urmia water level increases

Talking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Head of Eastern Azerbaijan Environmental Protection Department, Hamid Qasemi said the lake's water level has increased since the beginning of the country's water year starting September 23, 2018.

He said the previous level was 1,270,031 centimeters, adding the current level hit 1,270,070 centimeters.

He put the current area of the lake at 2,230 square km, adding that it was 4,526 square km during the country's high water year.

Lake Urmia is one of the largest permanent hypersaline lakes in the world.

The volume of water at the lake in 1997 measured at 30 billion cubic meters which dramatically decreased to 2.5 billion cubic meters in 2017.
