Prime Minister Abe will visit Tehran upon his personal decision with the goal of reducing tensions through meeting Iranian officials under the current circumstances and high tensions in the region, a Japanese government official at the country's embassy in Tehran said answering a question of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on the goal of the imminent visit.
The Japanese prime minister will be accompanied by the country's Foreign Minister Taro Kono in his visit to Tehran.
The delegation will arrive in Iran on Wednesday June 12.
Referring to the 90th year of diplomatic relations between Tehran and Tokyo that will coincide with the visit, the Japanese official added that Iran is a big power in the region and the two countries have always enjoyed good relations.
Japan, he said, has always supported the nuclear deal, and regards Iran as the main pillar of stability in the Middle East, he said.
The official also emphasized the importance of Iran for Japan's energy security.
The visit will come at a time that Iran is pressured by the US economic sanctions, including those affecting the oil sector.
The US unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as well as the European signatories' failure to cover the loss for Iran prompted Tehran to announce reduction of its commitment to the deal in May.
